Abstract: Resource scarcity has been associated with an increase in choices favoring immediate consequences and a reduced likelihood of altruistic behavior. This study investigated the effects of presenting scenarios of resource scarcity on the occurrence of altruistic behavior, using a social discounting task in which participants chose hypothetical monetary amounts for themselves or for others. The experimental manipulations related to scarcity and resource availability were based on indicators from the Multidimensional Poverty Index. The initial sample consisted of 91 participants, of whom 67 met the inclusion criteria for the analyses. These participants completed two versions of the task, one under a scarcity condition and another under a greater resource availability condition, using a within-subjects design with counterbalanced order. The results showed that, under scarcity information, there was a significant reduction in the tendency to favor socially distant others with monetary amounts. The social discounting rate was, on average, ten times higher in the scarcity condition, indicating a stronger devaluation of benefits attributed to others as social distance increased. Analyses of social discounting based on the area under the curve (AUC) indicated significantly lower AUC values in the resource scarcity condition, supporting the previous finding of steeper discounting with increased social distance in this context. These findings replicate and expand upon previous studies by showing that motivational operations, such as information about resource scarcity and availability, affect the likelihood of altruistic behavior, specifically by reducing the tendency to benefit others in scarcity scenarios, particularly those who are more socially distant.
