| Abstract: | This qualitative study, grounded in an action research design, investigates the teaching of volleyball in Physical Education classes in the final years of Elementary Education. The study problematizes the historical predominance of technicist, fragmented practices lacking pedagogical intentionality in the treatment of sport within the school environment. Based on the Critical-Overcoming Approach, the research sought to answer the following question: How can the teaching of volleyball be systematized in Physical Education classes in the final years of Elementary Education according to the principles of the Critical-Overcoming Approach? The general objective was to systematize the teaching of volleyball in Physical Education classes in the final years of Elementary Education, guided by the principles of the Critical Overcoming Approach. This objective was divided into three specific goals: (a) to identify students’ initial perceptions of volleyball; (b) to implement pedagogical strategies grounded in the Critical-Overcoming Approach for volleyball teaching; and (c) to develop a Didactic Unit systematically organized according to the principles of the Critical-Overcoming Approach. The study was conducted in a public elementary school in Planaltina, Federal District, Brazil, involving an eighth-grade class and its Physical Education teacher. Empirical data were produced through participant observation, field notes, pre- and post-intervention questionnaires, a semi-structured interview with the teacher, and discussion circles with students. Data were analyzed qualitatively through source triangulation. The findings revealed that the pedagogical intervention succeeded in problematizing students’ initial syncretic views, which were largely characterized by common-sense understandings and by a “practice for the sake of practice” perspective. The intervention promoted a more critical appropriation of volleyball as a historical and cultural manifestation. The use of adapted mini-volleyball as a pedagogical mediation strategy, combined with discussions on the historicity and commodification of sport, contributed to advances in students’ analytical capacities and in their recognition of the need to democratize access to sports knowledge. However, the study also identified contradictions present in the context of public schooling, including resistance to the proposed methodology, limitations in infrastructure, insufficient pedagogical time, and challenges related to the participation and inclusion of students served by the Resource Room program. The results indicate that the teaching of volleyball, when grounded in the Critical Overcoming Approach, presents significant potential for confronting exclusionary educational practices and promoting the socialization of systematized knowledge. Nevertheless, its implementation requires the continuous confrontation of the objective conditions that shape teachers’ work. As an educational resource resulting from this dissertation, a didactic unit structured from the documented experience is presented, designed to support the pedagogical praxis of other Basic Education teachers. |
