| Abstract: | The Quadrilátero Ferrífero is Brazil’s main mineral province and hosts infrastructure works essential to the national economy, such as railways, highways, and dams. These interventions take place in geotechnically complex terrains where young residual soils derived from phyllite are common. These metasedimentary and strongly anisotropic materials exhibit mechanical and hydraulic behavior controlled by the orientation of relict foliation, which directly influences the stability of soil masses, slopes, and retaining structures. Understanding such structural controls is fundamental to reduce design uncertainties and improve engineering practices in regions marked by intense tectonic and deformational activity. This dissertation investigates the geotechnical behavior of residual phyllite soils, focusing on the effects of structural anisotropy on shear strength and permeability. The research compiles and discusses laboratory and field investigations, including physical characterization, permeability tests, oriented direct shear, triaxial compression, dispersivity tests, and chemical analysis by X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Back-analyses of failure events and geotechnical instrumentation programs involving inclinometers, piezometers, and water level measurements were also considered. The interpretation of direct shear data, supported by statistical analyses, allowed the identification of geomechanical differences between specimen saturation conditions, as well as variability associated with material anisotropy. Higher shear rates led to greater mobilization of shear strength, highlighting the influence of strain rate on the behavior of residual phyllite soils. It was further verified that, although triaxial tests are widely employed, oriented direct shear performed parallel to foliation planes reproduces the most critical strength conditions. The study contributes to advancing the understanding of residual soils derived from phyllite and proposes an integrated approach combining laboratory testing, structural observations, back analyses, and in situ monitoring. |
