| Abstract: | Cement-based materials are susceptible to shrinkage, a phenomenon that may lead to cracking and compromise the performance and durability of structures. Among the mitigation strategies, the use of shrinkage-reducing admixtures and expansive agents stands out. In parallel, the ornamental stone industry generates large quantities of marble waste, whose thermal treatment emerges as a promising alternative that remains scarcely investigated in the context of shrinkage mitigation. Thus, this research investigated the influence of thermally treated marble waste as an alternative expansive agent through an integrated experimental and numerical approach. The study involved the thermal treatment and physical–chemical and mineralogical characterization of the residues, the evaluation of cement pastes and concretes in terms of fresh-state properties, mechanical performance and microstructure, and three-dimensional thermomechanical simulations, including a parametric study of the interaction between expansion, maturity and stress development. The results demonstrated that only thermal treatment at 1000 °C for 1 h provided significant reactivity to the residue, promoting the conversion of carbonates into free oxides. In cement pastes, the residue from Bahia exhibited more pronounced expansion, whereas the residue from Espírito Santo showed a more gradual and stable behavior. In concretes, mechanical performance was preserved, with increased tensile strength at the highest content of the Bahia residue and higher modulus of elasticity in concretes containing the Espírito Santo residue. Numerical simulations indicated that expansion induced by the treated residues can reduce tensile stresses in structural elements, provided that it is synchronized with the development of concrete stiffness. Very early expansion showed limited effectiveness, whereas delayed expansion resulted in higher localized stresses at the wall–base interface. The comparative analysis demonstrated that the treated residue exhibits performance comparable to that of a commercial expansive agent and behavior distinct from that of a shrinkage-reducing admixture, highlighting its potential as a technically and environmentally viable alternative. It is concluded that thermally treated marble waste has the potential to act as a non-commercial shrinkage-mitigating agent, contributing to crack reduction and the valorization of industrial residues. The integration of experimental and numerical results reinforces its applicability in structural concretes, provided that maturity effects and the timing of expansion are properly considered. |
