Abstract: The Quiricó Formation, a unit of the Sanfranciscana Basin, constitutes a significant Brazilian “paleontological park,” whose scientific interest has grown remarkably in recent decades due to its notable fossil diversity. The most prominent records include plants, ostracods, crocodylomorphs, dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and, predominantly, the gonorynchiform fish Francischanos moraesi. This thesis is structured into an introduction and three chapters. The general introduction provides the geological, paleontological, and historical context of studies within the Quiricó Formation. Chapter 1 describes in detail the anatomy of F. moraesi, supplementing previously published information from its original description and subsequent revisions with novel data on ontogeny and hitherto undescribed anatomical structures. The phylogenetic position of the species was also reassessed with the aid of different parameters to identify potential inconsistencies in earlier analyses and morphological interpretations. The Chapter 2 focuses on the taphonomic characterization, petrographic description, and paleoecological interpretation of specimens unearthed from papery shales of the São José Farm. Petrographic thin-section analysis, high-resolution computed microtomography (μCT), and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) were performed. The results suggested that F. moraesi likely fed on insects, providing evidence to reconstruct the low-energy lacustrine environment that characterized the Aptian in this region. Finally, the Chapter 3 describes a new fossil in the same stratigraphic level assigned to an Ornithocheiriformes pterosaur tooth, comprising the first occurrence for this geological unit. This material has already been published in the Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, while the remaining manuscripts resulting from this research will be submitted following the defense of this thesis. This study significantly expands the knowledge of the anatomy, systematics, taphonomy, and paleoecology of Gonorynchiformes, with a focus on F. moraesi, and of the lacustrine deposits of the Quiricó Formation. It contributes to understanding the interactions between organisms, fossilization processes, and paleoenvironmental conditions of the Lower Cretaceous deposits of the Quiricó Formation, reinforcing this unit role as one of the most relevant lacustrine fossil records in South America.
