| Abstract: | This dissertation investigated how human values influence the behavior of money laundering detection among professionals in Brazilian financial institutions. The study was based on Schwartz’s Theory of Human Values, which organizes ten motivational types into four higher-order dimensions — self-transcendence, conservation, selfenhancement, and openness to change — and on the literature on money laundering, which addresses its stages, economic impacts, and prevention mechanisms in the financial sector. Money laundering represents a global challenge, and in Brazil, financial institutions play a central role in prevention, requiring not only compliance with regulations but also the development of an ethical organizational culture. In this context, employees’ personal values, understood as guiding principles of behavior, are fundamental for adherence to integrity and compliance practices. This quantitative, crosssectional study involved 164 professionals from nine financial institutions. The sample consisted of 58.9% women and 41.1% men, with a mean age of 44.3 years (SD = 7.3) and an average tenure of 17.2 years. Most participants held a postgraduate degree (77.9%) and reported a monthly income exceeding ten minimum wages (49.7%). Two instruments were applied: the Portrait Values Questionnaire – Revised (PVQ-R), which measures 19 human values, and the Money Laundering Detection Scale, composed of 11 items assessing perceptions of knowledge, engagement, and institutional practices, both using Likert-type scales. Data were collected online and analyzed using multiple linear regression. Results showed that the values of conservation and self-transcendence are positive predictors of engagement in money laundering prevention, particularly the values of conformity to rules and universalism–nature. Psychometric analysis indicated that the Money Laundering Detection Scale demonstrated satisfactory evidence of factorial validity and internal consistency, confirming its suitability for the Brazilian context. Gender showed no significant effect. The findings reinforce that personal values are key determinants of adherence to ethical practices within organizations. Limitations include the use of a non-probabilistic sample restricted to the Brazilian context. Future research should consider cross-cultural studies and include additional psychological variables. |
