Abstract:	In this dissertation, we present an exploratory study that proposes translation solutions for the inherent characteristics of the fantasy literary genre, particularly the shared sense of estrangement between character and reader, which defines the genre. We seek to describe the process of translating fantasy literature from Brazilian Portuguese to Libras (Língua Brasileira de Sinais), to analyze the translation of fantastic elements to Libras through imagery descriptors, and demonstrate the preservation of inherent characteristics of the genre, especially the estrangement. To this end, we selected excerpts from Sarah J. Mass's book House of Earth and Blood (2022) and organized them into three stages of the translation process: Representation of Reality, Estrangement, and Insertion of the Fantastic Element, totaling fifteen excerpts. Subsequently, we developed the translation project following the analysis of the extratextual and intratextual elements of the text as addressed by Nord (2016), organizing the translation process as a Translation Project, Logbook, and Commented Translation. The theoretical framework for this discussion includes: Todorov (2008) and Roas (2014) on fantasy literature; Dollerup (2014) on the indirect translation approach used in this research; as well as Nord (2016) and Barbosa and Costa (2022) on the functionalist bias. We also include other authors who discuss and contribute to the topic. Data analysis showed us that the translation strategies and solutions were satisfactory in maintaining the fundamental characteristic of fantasy literature in the target language: estrangement. However, for the translation to be effective, a Glossary in Libras was incorporated during the process to translate proper names and magical creatures, bringing creative solutions to the final result of the proposed translations. We also conclude that, despite this being a pioneering study, the topic addressed is extremely important for Translation studies, an area that lacks research and academic materials on Libras translations of Fantasy literature.
