Abstract:	This Master’s Thesis seeks to establish a genealogy of the modern racial device based on the publication of "A new division of the earth, according to the different species or races of men which inhabit it”, a text written in the 17th century by the traveling physician François Bernier. This writing gains recognition and academic relevance by being considered the first to weave an initial and brief division of the world into racial categories linked to phenotype, the physical characteristics of the body; noting that this racial conception of the world only comes to be more firmly established, in an institutional and scientific manner, in the 19th century. Thus, when examining this work, one finds a glimpse, a prediction, of an idea that only becomes fixed in modernity over the centuries. The gain of this research, therefore, lies, especially, in the original translation of the aforementioned text into Portuguese and also in the argumentative construction about how elements and factors inherent to the racial power relations that characterize modernity have already reached a stage of germination and potentialsince the more informal and controversial literary productions of Bernier. Furthermore, thisresearch highlights a specific component of modern raciality: the sex/gendersystem, asit is presented asstructuring the inequalities and cultural expectations built upon the bodies of colonized subjects. Thus, it is analyzed how the intersection of race and gender is able to produce social hierarchies, positioning certain individuals in subalternity, but also complex pathways and strategies for liberation for the enslaved African population. In order to establish an intersectional and complex interpretation of the interactions between the matrices of oppression of race and the sex/gender system, one draws on the sociological and philosophical interpretations developed by black feminism and transfeminism. Thus, it is possible to understand how the disciplinary regimes of whiteness and cisnormativity work together to maintain Black people in a state of exploitation, fungibility, and vulnerability. By establishing a genealogical web of racial power in modernity, through the (re)arrangement of various historical and political elements, one can simultaneously learn how racism transforms and updates in the world and how Black people, through creative and ancestral forces, find fissures and ruptures in the colonial order to express their desires for a different world, one that is possible for their existences.
