| Abstract: | This study focused on the essential oil (EO) of Aniba rosaeodora, commonly known as rosewood EO, which is widely used in the cosmetics industry due to its bouquet of substances that imprint a widely appreciated characteristic fragrance. Its major component is linalool, a fixative commonly employed in perfumes. Due to the high value of rosewood EO and its predatory exploitation over the years, its trade and exploitation had to be regulated. As it is a natural and high value product, its adulteration is recurrent. Tampering of the EO, in addition to harming the local economy and causing unfair competition, exposes consumers to non-authentic products that do not express safety in their composition. Therefore, it is necessary to control the authenticity of the essential oils of rosewood marketed. This research proposes the use of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technique associated with chemometric methods of univariate and multivariate data analysis (PCA, HCA, and PLS-DA). These uses of associated techniques have been presented very relevant results in research on natural products and metabolomics, for the identification of markers, classification by origin, determination of authenticity of various products, including in the case of rosewood EO. The proposed method was applied to 135 samples extracted or acquired by the Laboratory of Forest Products (LPF/Brazilian Forest Service) and allowed the discrimination of these oils into authentic and non-authentic by chemometric analyzes associated with the quantification of components through 1H-qNMR technique. Thus, by the ratio of the signal areas of linalool and benzyl benzoate, a minor compound in rosewood EOs, combined with the condition that the ratio of the area of the region between 4.90 and 2.90 ppm and the area of the signal of linalool in 5.90 ppm must be less than 1.0 it was possible to differentiate practically all samples into authentic and non-authentic. The comparison between authentic brazilian samples and samples obtained in Peru revealed a clustering of peruvian samples with those from Maués/AM and that benzyl benzoate is the most influential minority compound in the samples obtained in Brazil. |
