| Abstract: | This systematic review aimed to assess the efficacy of controlling facial asymmetries resulting from facial paralysis through the use of Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A). The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022335626), and the development followed the guidelines for systematic reviews (PRISMA 2020). Seven electronic databases and grey literature were searched, in addition to the reference lists of included articles. Inclusion criteria comprised randomized clinical trials, non-randomized intervention studies, and case series with a minimum of 10 patients, comparing the impact of BTX-A treatment for facial asymmetry resulting from facial paralysis with other therapies, either BTX-A unrelated or no therapy at all. After removing duplicate articles, 1340 articles remained, which were read in two phases resulting in 18 articles included in this review. Six of the selected articles were pre- and post-studies [11,13,15,17,22,27], three were prospective cohorts [14,19,24], three were retrospective cohorts [10,16,25], five were randomized clinical trials [12,18,20,21,26], and one was a case series study [2]. The methodological quality assessment of the articles was carried out using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal instruments. All studies reported improvement in facial paralysis signs following the use of BTX-A. However, most studies had small sample sizes, limiting the generalizability of the results to a larger population. Moreover, there were variations in dosage, type of BTX-A used, number of injections, and dose per point, making it difficult to compare studies and conduct meta-analysis. Based on the studies included in this systematic review, it is suggested that the use of Botulinum toxin type A may be effective in attenuating or correcting facial asymmetry caused by facial paralysis. |
