| Abstract: | In this work, it is under investigation a verbal sequence from Apyãwa (Tupí-Guaraní Family), which presentes itself under the structure PERSON-V1-V2, being V1 any lexical verb and V2 a small group of verbs that generally manifest aspect or modality semantics. The verbs are: kwããw ‘to know’; patãr ‘to want’; pãw ‘to complete’/‘to finish’; and kãto ‘to be beautiful’/‘to be good’, which also expresses that the action was carried out with a high degree of efficiency. The study was made under the Functionalism view, and, due to the pandemic period we passed through, fieldwork was not possible. Therefore, data used were extracted mostly from Praça (2007). The concept of grammaticalization was explored and, within this, questions related to the morphology of TAM. A continuum of grammatical integration was also presented and a distribution of the different types of sentences in the Apyãwa language was proposed along the axis of this continuum. Then the main characteristics of the phenomenon under study, the verbal sequence, were presented: the fact that the verbs under analysis are also full verbs in the language and that the sequences are mono-clauses, which could be demonstrated by the scope of negation being the entire sequence, a verb not being an argument of the other and that they are under the action of the morphophonemic rules of joining morphemes. The presented features either bring the sequence closer of serial verbs or distance it from them. The same happens when trying to fit V2 as an auxiliary. Thus, it is proposed the analysis that, for the transitive verbs, kwããw and patãr, there is the incorporation of the clause object related to V1 by V2 and the appropriation by V2 of the second position of the sequence, behaving the complex formed by two verbs in the same way that a single verb behaves. For the intransitive verbs, pãw and kãto, one can see an extension of the semantics of such verbs to the others through a parallel with the nominal compounds with head in the first position, in which the first component is the head and the second has the function of modifier. |
