| Abstract: | Superabsorbent polymers (SAP) have been extensively studied by several researchers around the world. Its effects of mitigate the autogenous shrinkage of high-strength concretes has been consolidating, and this material is now diffused as a huge option to construction market. However, several properties of this polymer are still not well understood, as well and its effects when used together with supplementary cementitious materials, which is commom in high-strength concretes. Standing out among these materials, metakaolin is also currently treated with considerable prominence by academic research. Due to its high controled production process, this material is highly reactive and amorphous. Therefore, this work aimed to understand the behavior of highstrength microconcrete with superabsorbent polymer and metakaolin incorporated, in order to assess the feasibility of using these materials together in the construction industry. To achieve this objective, three microconcrete and paste mixes were determined, being a reference mix, and two mixes containing 0.15% and 0.30% of superabsorbent polymer on the cement mass. The three mixes had a metakaolin content of 10%, replacing the cement. The three mixes were made without using extra curing water for the superabsorbent polymer, with the same water/cement ratio. The three mixtures were subjected to consistency and specific mass tests, in the fresh state, and compression strength for cylinders, flexural strength followed by compression strength in cubes and elastic modulus, in the hardened state. In asddition, autogenous shrinkage tests were performed by measuring linear volumetric variation, using dial gauges. The microstructure of the pastes and microconcretes could be evaluated through X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, isothermal conduction calorimetry, and X-ray microtomography tests. The results point to a positive effect of using the superabsorbent polymer with metakaolin, mainly with regard to the increase in mechanical properties, and refinement of the porous structure, especially for the mix with 0.30% of polymer. It was also possible to observe the increase in the pozzolanic activity of metakaolin in the presence of SAP, reinforcing the advantages of applying these materials together. Finally, the method of using SAP without extra curing water in the mixture proved to be promising, while the traces with the polymer showed lower autogenous shrinkage, and higher strengths, overcoming the increase in porosity naturally caused by SAP. |
