| Abstract: | Before an era of industrialization and consumption, man was generating major changes in the ecosystem, part of these environmental changes is due to the poor treatment of waste that comes from the food industry. These residues generate proliferation of diseases, insects and rodents, when treated without quality control regulations. Brazil's world leader in chicken meat exportation obliges to take care of the waste treatment process that comes from the chicken slaughtering industry. Feathers, the largest component of this waste, can be evaluated for reuse that does not require high costs of treatment processes, making it likely to be used as a reinforcement fiber in the construction of unpaved and easily accessible road pavement structures. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the potentialities of chicken feathers, used as reinforcement fiber, by verifying the mechanical behavior of the soil upon its incorporation, characterization, compaction, mini CBR, simple compression tests were performed. diametral compression traction and resilience module. In order to verify the mechanical resistance variation of the mixtures in time intervals, several specimens were buried in the field to analyze the degree of influence of the feather on the obtained results. Two types of lime (CH-I and CH-III) were used as an additive to check the degradability of the fiber against alkaline media. Thus, combinations of soil - lime, soil - fiber, and soil - fiber - were tested in addition to pure soil. The results indicated the feather as an influential element mainly in the strength resistance of the soil. The addition of lime also initially increases the tensile strength of the compound. As for the mini CBR of the soil, the influence of the feather is conditioned to the incorporated content, accepting as favorable situation compounds with 0.25% and 0.50% of fiber, with higher values generally leading to decreases in the values of mini CBR. Fiber does not significantly influence resistance to simple compression. The resilience module of mixtures with added fibers showed favorable results, however, analyzing the permanent deformations, the fibers tend to increase this deformation with fiber content increases. Curing methods also influence considerably as the fiber content in the mixture. There is fiber degradation in alkaline media, not involving large variations in strength directly linked to the fiber content, but to the curing method. |
