Abstract: Despite the existence of countless studies in the relevant literature that report the inability of the traditional voltage unbalance (VU) indicators to translate, with due precision, the conditions under which they are associated, the volume of studies that propose alternative ways for the quantification of this power quality phenomenon continues to be incipient. In this scenario, some authors have suggested the use of the VU indicator from the symmetric components method, called the VUF, together with i) the angular difference between the negative (V̅2) and positive (V̅1) sequence voltage components, or ii) with the module of the positive sequence component (V1). However, the joint use of two or more indicators for the quantification of the unbalance makes the process of establishing the compatibility levels of this phenomenon more complex. Considering the aspects mentioned above lead to the idea of developing this study, which aims to present an alternative methodology for the quantification of VU, developed based on the effects of this phenomenon on the temperature and efficiency of three-phase induction motors (TIM). Such methodology allows the obtaining of an indicator for the quantification of the unbalance (WVUF) that contemplates the combined effects of the modules and angles of V̅2 and V̅1. In order to apply this methodology and evaluate its performance in the laboratory, a TIM is subjected to a comprehensive set of balanced and unbalanced voltage conditions. From the results of these tests and the use of the proposed methodology, it was observed that the WVUF, when compared to the VUF, reduces the uncertainties inherent to the VU quantification process. Thus, it is possible to infer that the methodology presented in this work resulted in an indicator that represents the joint effects of V̅2 and V̅1 on the temperature and efficiency of motors connected to the electrical system. The advantages linked to the WVUF designate it as a potential alternative for industrial applications and for replacing the traditional methods used for quantifying VU present in the major standards that deal with the subject.
