Abstract: This research proposes a reflection on the relationship between democracy, city and urban segregation. It is an analysis of actions and discourses of residents of the Região Administrativa Lago Norte, an elitist region of the Brazilian Federal District, with the main objective of analyzing the correlation between living in a segregated space, generating mechanisms of segregation and weakening the democratic element of the city as a space of encounters between different social groups. The conception of democracy adopted in this work is based on the idea of political inclusion and for which inequalities constitute the primordial element of the analysis. In this context, we propose a look at democracy from the geographic space, understanding that space is socially produced and that social and power relations are inscribed in it. Therefore, it carries the marks of the political system and its obstacles and possibilities, which can contribute to elucidate ways of maintaining and reproducing inequalities. We seek to contribute to broaden the discussion about the effectiveness of political inclusion in the public sphere, based on a reading about socio-spatial dynamics and the daily influences on this dynamics. In order to do so, the research was concerned with analyzing how the actions and discourses of residents of that region became segregationist practices that promote the harassment of people considered "strange" to the region, especially poor and black people, which decisively compromises the production of an open and inclusive city as the democratic ideal advocated. At the theoretical level, using the contribution of Iris Young mainly, it is discussed how segregation destroys possible urban life and is a crucial element of the reproduction of structural social inequalities that interfere in the accomplishment of democracy, as it impairs the interaction between social groups and results in the exclusion of certain social sectors from the public sphere. The deepening of such segregationist practices contributes to a deepening of political inequality and, therefore, to the support of masculine, white and bourgeois power.
