Abstract: The Cerrado is the second largest biome of Brazil, characterized by differences phytophysiognomies divided in savannas, grasslands and forests formations. This biome is vital to maintain national water resources. Therefore, it is fundamental to investigate the hydrologic processes behavior, particularly soil water infiltration. The objectives of this work were (i) to carry out a systematic review on the soil water infiltration in phytophysiognomies of the Cerrado biome and (ii) to evaluate the soil infiltration capacity in two phytophysiognomies of the Cerrado biome: Campo Sujo and Cerrado Típico. The first objective gathered studies from three different databases: Web of Science, Periódicos Capes, and Scholar Google. The key terms were “infiltração” AND “Cerrado”, “infiltration” AND “Cerrado” and “infiltração no Cerrado”. The exclusion criteria were the title, abstract and if there was any doubt in existing information of interest (infiltration capacity in native covers in the Cerrado) the articles were red entirely. This research found fifteen articles (22 experiments), with studies prevailing in the Brazilian center-west region. The average of infiltration capacity of studies found was 792 mm h−1. A great part of infiltration capacity studies did not define which phytophysiognomy was studied (twelve articles), using terminologies such as “Cerrado” and “Cerrado nativo” and others. These studies show the hydrologic importance of the Cerrado biome and native formations to the infiltration process. However, it is possible that there are differences among the different types of native vegetation in the biome, that deserves to be investigated owing to its phytophysiognomy’s diversity. The second objective was carried out in the IBGE ecological reserve – Federal District, where both phytophysiognomies are found on Red Oxisol. The methodology was to assess the infiltration capacity and the variables that influence the water infiltration (soil bulk density, total porosity, soil resistance to penetration, organic matter). The results show that infiltration capacity average of 697.8 mm h−1 (±521.4) in the Cerrado Típico was higher and significantly different from the average of the Campo Sujo of 413.5 mm h−1 (±181.4). The other aspects of the soil evaluated among the phytophysiognomies also showed significant differences. This study identified that the soil under the Cerrado Típico phytophysiognomy presented greater infiltration capacity in comparison to the soil of the Campo Sujo phytophysiognomy.
