Abstract: The birds of the Caatinga biome respond to the semi-arid in different ways, and there may be a wide variation of movement strategies to explore the environmental heterogeneity of the biome. During the dry season, those more forested areas may serve as refuges for many bird species. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between vegetation characteristics and the presence of three typical birds of the Caatinga (Pseudoseisura cristata, Thamnophilus capistratus and Herpsilochmus pectoralis) in the semi-arid region of the Real river basin, in different caatinga phytophysiognomies. The study area encompassed part of Tobias Barreto and Poço Verde municipalities in the state of Sergipe, Ribeira do Amparo and Itapicuru, municipalities in the state of Bahia. We conducted our fieldwork during the dry season and the early rainy season. The methods consisted in registering the presence or absence of each bird species using a playback technique to facilitate the species detection. We selected 30 sample points within the study area, at least 300 m apart. We established quadrats of 20 x 20 m in the study area at each sample point, where we estimated richness, density and diameter of shrub-tree species, and canopy cover. We tested the hypothesis that the vegetation structure and composition specifically affect the probability of the habitat use by each species, using generalized linear models based on the combination of these variables. Based on the Akaike criterion for small samples (AICc), we selected the models that showed the highest weights. We considered explanatory variable, or predictor of species occupancy, those showing highest relative importance (p-value<0.05). Based on our results, we could not reject this study hypothesis because there were variables related to the vegetation structure and composition that differently affect the probability of bird occupancy. The diameter was significant for P. cristata, with a positive effect, and for T. capistratus, with a negative effect. The canopy cover was the most important variable to explain bird occupancy in the study area. Our results showed a significant relationship between fractional cover and the three species, having the highest relative importance in the models. It had a negative effect on P. cristata and a positive one on T. capistratus and H. pectoralis. Plant species richness was also a predictor of the spatial occupancy of H. pectoralis.
