| Abstract: | This research has tackled the reality of young residents in Brasilia, who engage in the public service workforce not seeking professional satisfaction, but attributes that do not relate to the labor activity, such as good salary, financial stability and advantageous working hours. Nevertheless, it was necessary to analyze economic and cultural aspects of the city that attribute to these government jobs a privileged position in relation to the workforce. Based on the analyses of socioeconomic data, it has been concluded the strength of the public service is a source of wealth and its impact on the distribution of income in the capital. Also, the morals in this consumer society and its endless opportunities that diminish the value of labor in order to satisfy other needs have also been studied. The need individuals have to generate income and have access to goods and services prompt individuals to neglect a hypothetical absence of a deeper meaning in terms of work routine. It has been proven that professional dissatisfaction on a daily basis causes a series of psychological and social dysfunctions. Therefore, this research has shifted its focus from the standpoint of material wealth that influence people to engage in a career in the public sector, to study the lives of ten public servants. Prior to that, a review of theories on volunteer’s perspective and determinants of individual behavior were conducted in order to direct the investigation of these personal projects. The interviewed subjects had been accepted into job positions that did not required specific qualification, that meaning, some candidates were only obligated to have a bachelor’s degree, regardless of the field of study. Therefore, a multitude of distinct social and academic trajectories have been analyzed. In addition, theoretical tools in clinical sociology were used to analyze elements that have not come to light during the current analysis and that have exceeded the pragmatism of income and financial stability. It has been established that the subject’s family history and the fear of an unfavorable work scenario caused by precariousness in employment contracts have been a decisive factor in the lives of young adults when deciding to engage in the public service. |
