Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the potential of Payment for Environmental Services (PES) to improve the economic, social and environmental benefits in the water resources management, with the interaction between forests and water in small rural properties. The case of Extrema-MG got highlighted because it was considered the first municipal initiative to pay the landowners in return for guaranteeing the supply of environmental services aimed at improving water resources. By implementing the conservation practices, the producer is helping to combat diffuse pollution by reducing erosion and sedimentation, and increase infiltration in the soil of their property contributing to the water supply sub-basin. From the analysis of the case of Extrema, it was established that the imminent water shortages in large urban centers can be considered risk factor to prioritize operation areas of PSE programs in water resources management. It was also seen that the consolidation of the basin committee and the adoption of water resources management tools, including charging for water use, promote the economic sustainability of the PES projects, once that the charging would be the legitimate source of financing. And finally it was observed that the importance of local government and the strengthening of the role of mayor in leading environmental initiatives can interfere directly in the positive results of PES projects in water resource management. The study concludes that the PES can be considered a good strategy to ensure the practice of sustainable agriculture and sustainable forest management that influence, directly, the conservation and the integrated management of water resources and forest in a river basin.
