Abstract:	This research has as object the analysis of the way in which the records survey are being thought and practiced in Brazil. The study started with a literature review on two of the main currents of Archival thinking that had influence in Brazil and that presented ideas close to what is meant by records survey. Then a bibliographic search was carried out in the national and international literature, in order to analyze the uses of terms and concepts of diagnosis (in the sense of records survey) in the area, comparing foreign and brazilian ideas. To complement this search and better understand how records survey are practiced in Brazil, requests for information were sent to the agencies of the brazilian federal government, through the "Sistema Eletrônico de Informação ao Cidadão", to a documentary analysis of the records survey prepared within this institutions. Such analysis was the basis for determining how the brazilian Federal Public Administration uses records survey to archival activities. The choice of this agencies of the federal government was the way of representing the Brazilian institutions. It was found that the absence of standards to allow demarcations to define what should be considered a record survey and wich it limits the comparation with international ideas that is relate to.
