| Abstract: | Motherhood in the university context constitutes an experience shaped by social, cultural, and institutional determinants that directly impact women’s mental health and psychosocial well-being. Within higher education, academic demands are added to caregiving responsibilities historically attributed to women, resulting in overload, psychological distress, and challenges to university retention. This dissertation aimed to understand the effects of academic daily life on the mental health and psychosocial well-being of student mothers at the University of Brasília (UnB), based on their perceptions and lived experiences. This is a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive study conducted through the application of an online questionnaire to undergraduate and graduate students who are mothers. Data were analyzed using Thematic Analysis, as proposed by Braun and Clarke (2006). The results indicate that motherhood in the university context is marked by physical and emotional overload, feelings of guilt, exhaustion, and difficulties in balancing study, work, and caregiving responsibilities, compounded by the fragility of institutional support policies. The findings also highlight individual self-care strategies and informal support networks as the main coping resources, revealing a shift of responsibility for mental health care onto the women themselves. It is concluded that promoting the mental health of student mothers requires strengthening institutional policies for student retention, gender equity, and care, recognizing motherhood as a legitimate dimension of academic trajectories. |
