| Abstract: | Land-use change, such as deforestation and agricultural expansion based on an agroindustrial model of plantations is the main source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Brazil, reducing carbon stocks in biomass and soils. To reverse this scenario, the protection of ecosystems and the enhancement of carbon (C) sequestration by agroecosystems with greater vegetation cover and lower dependence on energy-intensive inputs are essential. In this context, Agroforestry Systems (AFS) represent a key mechanism to optimize photosynthesis and increase soil organic matter (SOM) content due to higher tree density and the management of vegetation stratification and succession, thereby effectively sequestering carbon. The aim of this study was to compare chemical attributes in soil and solar reflectance in two coffee production areas in the Federal District, Brazil: one under monoculture (Mono) and the other under a successional agroforestry system (SAFS). A fallow area (Fallow) was used as a control treatment. The methodology included soil sampling (0–30 cm) during the dry and rainy seasons to quantify pH, SOC, P and K. Additionally, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) overflight captured vertical images to calculate the Optimized Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (OSAVI) and assess differences in vegetation vigor and density among the agroecosystems. Interviews were conducted to evaluate floristic composition, land-use history, and management practices. The analyses revealed superior performance of the SAFS in terms of pH and available K, and higher SOC content (79.2% greater compared to the monoculture). Mean OSAVI values were 285% higher in the SAFS (0.647) compared to the monoculture system (0.168) (p < 0.001). These results reinforce the strategic role of successional agroforestry systems as Nature-Based Climate Solutions for mitigating climate change through carbon off setting in agriculture. |
