Abstract:	This research interprets the experience of living in an apartment block amid the digitalisation of social life. The ethnography examines how digital technologies intertwine with and reorganise the relationships among residents and between them and their pets, their apartments, the internal politics, and the block’s infrastructure. The multimodal investigation is grounded in participant observation, semi-structured interviews with 38 participants, photographic documentation of apartment interiors, and engagement with digital technologies and platforms, especially chat groups on WhatsApp. The fieldwork was conducted over 18 months in an apartment block here referred to as Residencial dos Ipês, located in the Pilot Plan area of Brazil’s Federal Capital, Brasília. With 438 studio flats (also known as kitnets) ranging from 25 m² to 29 m², the place contrasts with the city’s modernist urban project: it is entirely enclosed, lacks pilotis (open ground-level structures that allow free circulation), and has regulated access. Its residents are part of the segments of the middle strata and live in single-person households. The thesis investigates Residencial dos Ipês across different analytical axes: (1) it examines how the apartment block establishes particular ways of living in the Pilot Plan area and of accessing urban life in Brasília; (2) it investigates, through the lens of material culture, the negotiation between human and non-human agencies within the studio flats and the modulation of aesthetics, desires, and domestic practices; (3) it explores how residents’ uses and appropriations of digital artefacts render the apartment block “portable” and “mobile”, accessible remotely through smartphones. The research reveals how online interactions reconfigure the block’s boundaries, catalyse friendships and conflicts, articulate belonging and community cohesion, and reflect social normativities. The digital supports navigation in everyday life, adding complexity to the routines and social fabric of the block. The ethnography contributes to the literature by theorising communicational practices and vicinal sociality that shape the humanities in the Digital Era.
