Abstract: Identifying the patterns and drivers for the distribution of biodiversity is one of the main goals of Biogeography. Niche traits – the set of environmental conditions and resources suitable for species’ survival and maintenance – are among the main drivers of species distribution. The Center-periphery Hypothesis (CPH) is a theory used to study these patterns and assumes that the center of a species’ distribution will have optimal niche conditions and higher environmental suitability. Individuals in these areas will show greater demographic performance, which is evidenced by higher abundance and better performance in morphological and genetic traits. This thesis aimed to evaluate the patterns and drivers of distribution from Cerrado lizards using the CPH as an ecological framework for testing biogeographic patterns. In chapter 1, we tested the CPH with two lizard lineages with distinct distribution patterns. We used lizard body condition and lizard gastrointestinal parasite abundance and richness as indicators of demographic performance of lizards. We sampled lizard communities in localities from core Cerrado and peripheral isolates from southwestern Amazon, assessing the effects of environmental, spatial and biotic variables on those indicators. To get a broader view on patterns of parasitism, wassessed the effect of geographic, environmental, spatial and biotic dissimilarities in the patterns of parasite beta diversity. Variation in demographic performance depended on the lizard lineage, and distance to Cerrado’s center was relevant for parasite alpha and beta diversities of lizard gastrointestinal parasites. In chapter 2, we evaluated the patterns predicted by the CPH in gradients of geographic centrality and peripherality and environmental suitability. We assessed the demographic performance of Tropidurus itambere based on morphological (body mass, length and body conditions and fluctuating asymmetry from scales) and genetic (diversity and differentiation) traits, checking the influence of geographic centrality and peripherality and environmental suitability. We used Species Distribution Models to measure environmental suitability, and the predicted area of occurrence for the species. Geographic centrality was a significant driver of Fluctuating Asymmetry from the 1st supra-orbital row of scales and Citochrome b genetic differentiation. In chapter 3 we assessed Tropidurus oreadicus’ range dynamics under past and future environmental conditions. We identified and characterized environmental suitability, integrating with a phylogeographic reconstruction to evaluate historic dispersal and the dynamic of range expansion. We proposed an integrative methodology to evaluate range dynamics under scenarios future climate change conditions and determine the effects of future climate change T. oreadicus’ range in geographic and niche spaces. Range shifts caused by niche divergence were relevant during T. oreadicus evolutionary history. In the future, suitable areas will decrease substantially in geographic and niche spaces. This thesis shows that the Center-periphery Hypothesis and its premises provide a relevant ecological framework for evaluations of species’ distribution. Finally, the results from this thesis stress the importance of historic climatic fluctuations to the performance of Cerrado lizards and the potential negative effect of future climate change.
