Abstract:	The Tocantins-Araguaia basin is the largest basin exclusive in Brazilian territory and can be divided into three main sections: the Upper Tocantins, the Lower Tocantins and the Araguaia. Currently, 751 species are known for this basin, with many new species being described over the years, such as Characidium kalunga, among others. The objective of this research is to characterize and inventory the ichthyofauna of the Upper Rio Tocantins sub-basin, filling existing sampling gaps, especially in the regions nearby the Federal District. To survey the ichthyological diversity in this sub-basin, visits were made to the collections of the University of Brasília – CIUnB and the Catholic University of Brasília – LACOZ. A bibliographical survey was also carried out in the Google Scholar and Web of Science online databases of scientific articles. Further, field trips were conducted along the Upper Rio Tocantins sub-basin, from the limits of this sub-basin in the Federal District to the northern limits in the State of Tocantins. The expeditions took place between April 2021 and January 2024, focusing mainly on points with poor sampling in the sub-basin, totaling visits to 60 drainages. From the bibliographical survey, collection materials and field trips, a total of 491 species distributed in 11 orders, 42 families and 201 genera were recorded. Of the total species, 469 species had previously been identified for this sub-basin in other scientific works, however, 22 species remained indetermined at the species level, possibly corresponding to new taxa. From the total, 70 species were recorded in examined collection materials, and 141 species collected and deposited in the Ichthyological Collection of the University of Brasília. The orders Characiformes and Siluriformes were the most representative, with 240 species (49%) and 146 species (30%). In the field trips, three exotic species were captured in the Alto Tocantins sub-basin: Poecilia reticulata, popularly known as Guppy, was collected in Brasília-DF, in the Votorantim stream; Xiphophorus hellerii, known as swordfish; collected in the Federal District in the Ouro stream; and Coptodon rendalli, known as tilapia, was collected in Brasília-DF. During the field trips it was possible to notice streams that were dry, mainly in the Maranhão River sub-basin region, located in the Federal District and in regions of the State of Tocantins, which made collections impossible. In the State of Tocantins, on the Rio Azuis, the fishes collected showed malformations, with shortened fins (pectoral and dorsal) and spinal column. Five new records were also verified: Moenkhausia lopesi, native to the Paraguay River basin; Leporinus aff. paranensis; Phalloceros harpagos, previously recorded in the Paraná and Paraguay river basins; Farlowella henriquei, considered restricted to the Araguaia basin; and Eigenmannia dutrai, native to the Alto Paraná basin. The information gathered in this research will significantly contribute to more effective management of ichthyofauna and conservation, especially in small streams, where most of these field trips were carried out and which are often neglected.
