| Abstract: | Global agribusiness faces intense pressure to meet the food demands of overpopulation by using alternatives to conventional agrochemicals. To this end, new approaches and technologies are necessary to meet global production and consumption in an environmentally sustainable manner without compromising the sector's economy. Thus, the present work aims to develop C-dots-based nanopesticide formulations that can be applied in weed control crops of economic importance to the agro-industrial market. Initially, nanoformulations containing arbolina® as a nanocarrier of 2,4-D, diuron, glyphosate, and Bordeaux mixture were produced. However, such formulations did not show herbicidal biological activities. Thus, a new strategy was adopted to synthesize a new nanocarrier with a size of 3.28 nm, containing 18% carbon (w/w) and 20% nitrogen (w/w) in its elemental composition. Three nanopesticide formulations were produced: 2,4-D (NF α), glyphosate (NF β), and diuron (NF δ). These formulations exhibited unique characteristics through ultravioletvisible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), fluorescence, and Zeta potential measurement techniques at different pH ranges. The biological activities of the nanopesticide formulations were measured in bioassays with etiolated wheat coleoptiles and standard target species seeds. In preliminary results, the formulation containing glyphosate (NF β) showed the best biological activity among the produced preparations (p<0.01). The NF α and NF β formulations were tested in a 14-day phytotoxicity bioassay on the weed Conyza bonariensis, and these preparations showed higher phytotoxicity than the applied 2,4-D and glyphosate herbicides (p≤0.05). The NF β and glyphosate formulations were evaluated in a 28-day phytotoxicity bioassay on the weed Eleusine indica, and only the produced nanopesticide showed significant phytotoxic character (p≤0.05). Thus, the developed nanopesticide formulations demonstrated herbicidal character for agricultural pests. This project derived a patent filed in 2024 entitled “Herbicide enhancer based on functionalized carbonaceous nanoparticles and their uses”, under registration number BR1020240215397. |
