Abstract:	The present study was based on the bystander approach, whose theoretical model indicates the influences and barriers that interfere with the action of intervening to help a victim in an emergency situation, as well as on the concept of empathy composed of three dimensions: affective, cognitive and behavioral. The objective was to investigate gender differences regarding barriers to intervening in dating violence situations compared to levels of empathy among young adults. This is a quantitative research with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 250 participants, including both men and women, aged 18 to 30 years. To investigate the likelihood of intervention, the Bystander Attitudes Scale in Dating Violence Situations (ESPECTA-VN) was used, and empathy levels were investigated using the Multidimensional Interpersonal Reactivity Scale (EMRI). Participants also completed a Sociodemographic Questionnaire. Descriptive and correlational analyses were conducted, using secondary data, to investigate how men and women respond to the inherent influences in dating violence situations (physical, sexual, and psychological) and their relationship with the levels of empathy displayed. The results did not indicate significant differences between men and women in relation to barriers to intervention, as they were susceptible in a similar manner. In situations involving different types of violence, significant differences were found for sexual and psychological violence situations, indicating that men and women react differently in perceiving these situations. Regarding empathy, significant differences were identified for the Empathic Concern (affective component) and Personal Distress dimensions. Women tended to show more concern for others, and in emotionally tense situations, they experienced more personal distress when witnessing the suffering of others. As for gender differences, barriers to intervention, and levels of empathy, negative significant differences were identified between Personal Distress and the likelihood of intervention in cases of physical and psychological violence, indicating that higher personal distress is associated with a lower likelihood of intervening in these situations. Empathic Concern and Perspective Taking (cognitive component) did not increase the likelihood of intervention in the three types of violence investigated. In this study, the empathy variable was not found to be associated with the likelihood of a bystander displaying a favorable attitude towards intervening in dating violence situations. Future studies, especially those with representative samples of different genders, races, and sexual orientations, may provide further insights into these relationships.
