| Abstract: | In the last decade, between 2012 and 2022, Brazil, following the global trend of energy transition and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, significantly increased its installed capacity of wind and solar energy. Additionally, recent regulations have represented major advancements for the electricity sector, such as Law No. 14,300/2022, which established the legal framework for micro and mini distributed generation, Ordinance No. 140/2022 from INMETRO, which allowed the use of hybrid inverters up to 75kW, and the pilot project launched by COPEL in 2020 for the purchase of energy from independent producers, who are expected to establish microgrids. With the evolution of regulations and technologies, the use of microgrids is expected to become increasingly common and accessible in Brazil. Therefore, this work conducted a study on the components and controls necessary for the proper operation of a microgrid, capable of operating connected to or disconnected from the grid, as well as the modeling of a four-wire, three-phase microgrid. To validate the study and the modeling, the microgrid was implemented using the Simulink® platform of Matlab®, composed of two-stage photovoltaic systems and batteries. In the DC-DC stage, a Boost converter with Incremental Conductance MPPT algorithm was used. In the DC-AC stage, a three-level NPC inverter with Space Vector modulation was used. To control the power of the battery banks, a bidirectional Buck-Boost converter was used. In addition to voltage and current controls of the inverters, the following controls were also implemented: DC bus voltage imbalance, AC voltage imbalance, islanding detection, synchronization for reconnection, smooth transition during islanding, secondary controls for voltage, frequency, and active power, and energy management. Finally, computer simulations validated the performed modeling, as the microgrid exhibited proper operation in both grid-connected and islanded modes, with smooth transitions and meeting the quality requirements for voltage level, voltage imbalance, frequency, and total harmonic distortion of current and voltage. These results demonstrate that the modeled microgrid presents great potential for application in distributed generation systems. |
