Abstract:	This dissertation studies the objects of the Rui Barbosa Historic House Museum (MCRB) collection that belonged to Maria Augusta Viana Bandeira (1855 – 1948), known by her name after her marriage to Rui Barbosa (1849 – 1923): Maria Augusta Rui Barbosa. We focused our attention on the proposal of a first identification of what would be the “Maria Augusta Rui Barbosa Collection” and particularly on a black silk satin dress with a white print. Therefore, it was necessary to characterize the objects related to Maria Augusta – here treated as a collection, but not understood by the MCRB in this way –, as well as to understand Maria Augusta Rui Barbosa herself, considering that the objects belonged to her. In addition to the MCRB collection, photographic records of the iconography of the Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation (FCRB) were also analyzed. Through the dress, and related studies in Rui Barbosa’s biographies, archives, and other primary and secondary information sources, the persona and trajectory of Maria Augusta was composed. The materiality of the dress, its production method and correlation with the fashion of the time were also addressed, treating such aspects as informational foundations. Finally, a preliminary proposal was made by the Maria Augusta Rui Barbosa Collection, which organized the items that probably belonged to her. The objective is to increasingly bring to light the trajectory of this woman, who was a key piece for the construction of one of the most important institutions in the fields of research and museums in Brazil.
