| Abstract: | Bacterial vaginitis is considered the most prevalent vaginal infection that affects women of childbearing age, being associated with risk factors such as multiple sexual partners or change of partner, vaginal douching, use of antimicrobials, among others. Diagnosis is commonly made by the presence of clinical signs and symptoms and by criteria based on tests such as vaginal pH measurement, amine test, wet microscopy and gram staining bacterioscopy. However, in many cases the diagnosis became imprecise or even incorrect. The use of molecular laboratory methods in the diagnosis of such infections becomes of great value, since through this it is possible to identify and quantify the microorganisms that make up the vaginal microbiota, as well as classify this microbiota. The aim of this study was to analyze the profile of bacterial vaginitis and vaginal microbiota of women with clinical indication through the results of retrospective exams carried out in a private laboratory. 225 patients were included and the vaginal microbiota of 217 women were classified, 8 of which were not classified because they did not have any type of microorganism identified in the sample. Vaginal microbiota was further identified as eubiotic and dysbiotic by reduction or excess. The two Community State Types (CST) found were CST I and IV-B, however the latter was subdivided into four subgroups CST IV-B: classical, with L. crispatus, with L. iners and with L. jensenii. The most prevalent microorganisms were Gardenerella vaginalis and Atopobium vaginae, and it was possible to observe the presence of Lactobacillus spp. in bacterial vaginitis samples, along with anaerobic bacteria, corroborating the hypothesis that bacterial vaginitis is a polymicrobial infection, and that Lactobacillus, although playing an important role in preventing vaginal infections and contributing to vaginal health, in the presence of these bacteria anaerobes that cause vaginitis Lactobacillus spp. may lose this protective ability and allow infection to occur. This work demonstrated the importance of using molecular techniques to aid in the correct diagnosis of vaginal infections, especially when bacterial vaginitis occurred in the presence of Lactobacillus spp., one of the main species that make up the vaginal microbiota, which demonstrated the need for additional studies. to elucidate these and other questions highlighted by the study. |
