| Abstract: | Learning self-regulation has become a valuable construct to understanding giftedness and to the preparation of educational practices targeted toward these students; it encompasses metacognitive processes, and social-affective and motivational aspects. Seeking subsidies to plan educational experiences aimed at the education for this heterogeneous audience, the main goal of the present study is to analyze, based on the concepts of self-regulation and learning, the affective and cognitive strategies applied by a student who shows signs of giftedness and talent to broaden the knowledge of a foreign language in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The methodology used is Case Study. As well as the student, his mother and three of his teachers were also subjects of this investigation. The present study highlights controversial views on the phenomenon of giftedness that cross the school and family environment; gaps on teacher training in relation to the theme; adverse conditions to the identification and educational assistance of the student. The student's relationship with the school in which they're enrolled, presents significant breakdowns; it is clear that both the student's intellectual talents, academic skills, ease of learning and interest in learning processes, as well as the subsidies that are offered by the family environment, are factors that, taken individually, do not affect their engagement in the school environment. In addition to the pandemic scenario and its implications for the quality of teaching and learning processes, the teaching organization presents previous situations that make the process of assessment, identification and educational assistance to the student difficult. The case study indicates that the teaching team needs to take an investigative approach, analyze learning strategies observing the student's cognitive, affective and motivational aspects. In this way, the construct of learning self-regulation presents fundamental subsidies for the planning of educational practices aimed at the development of academic, intellectual and socio-emotional skills; expands the possibilities of identifying talents in the regular classroom; it allows the student to organize, monitor and evaluate the learning process itself, considering the different rhythms and ways of approaching knowledge. |
