| Abstract: | The purpose of this work is to provide a framework for the study of the typography of Brazilian indigenous languages, a topic on which there is little research and little scientific documentation. This work addresses this gap from the perspective of visual communication, describing the state-of-the-art in practice and proposing a method for developing writing technologies for these languages. This thesis is rooted in the challenging particularities of the orthographies of many Brazilian indigenous languages; these employ accented characters that are unusual, or even absent, in most of the digital typefaces available today. From a typographic point of view, attention must be paid to these particularities, in order to facilitate textual communication (in digital media) in the daily lives of indigenous minorities, in their original languages. In this regard, this research proposes the construction of a research framework that can embrace the typography of Brazilian indigenous languages and, for this purpose, it proposes two main developments. First, a detailed description of the methodology developed for the data collection of this research, whose essential purpose is the construction of a systematic and updated cataloging of the orthographies of Brazilian indigenous lan- guages. Second, the development of digital typefaces and keyboard layouts, tools that are essential for the composition and edition of texts in Brazilian indigenous languages. Finally, special attention was given to technical issues that were largely neglected in the field of indigenous languages, especially in relation to the encoding of these languages. Engaging with these technical issues is critical for understanding the context of using these encodings and communicating in these languages. To support this work, a vast body of documents was collected, analysed and discussed, with the aim of helping to understand the practices adopted in typography of indigenous languages, not only in the type design and encoding process, but also in the relationships with the field of communication. |
