| Abstract: | The chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is the third most important legume crop in the world. Nevertheless, this crop is yet little known by the Brazilian market. In Brazil, chickpeas from the “Kabuli” type are predominant. However, most of the world production is concentrated in the “Desi” type. Cultivars of the “Desi” type have as main characteristics the green stem with purple spots, purple flowers and small, angular seeds (with colors varying from yellow to black). Despite the physical differences, the two chickpea types are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and minerals, which makes the grain an excellent source of nutrients for human food. In the present study, phenotypic characteristics of several “Desi” accessions were evaluated in order to provide new materials with potential for the domestic market; as an option for Brazilian farmers to diversify their production systems. The experiment was conducted at Embrapa Vegetables, Brasília–DF, during the years 2019 and 2020. Ten lines and two commercial “Desi” varieties (standards) were evaluated, in a randomized block design of three and four replications, 2019 and 2020, respectively. The following traits were evaluated: grain yield, plant density; number of primary and secondary branches; plant height; insertion height of the first pod; harvest index; number of pods; seed length, width and thickness; weight of a thousand seeds and the seed color. The analyzes of variance were made using RStudio software and Pearson's correlation was assessed using the GENES software. The inbred lines 10108, 10159, and 10209 displayed superior performance for most of the agronomic traits in relation to the two standard cultivars. However, the low insertion point of the first pod is still a limiting agronomic factor for these lines. The increase in plant density in 2020 increased the productivity of all lines in this study, with values reaching up to three times more. Grain yield displayed a greater number of correlations with other characteristics phenotypic. Therefore, the present work allowed for the identification of promising genetic materials of chickpea from the “Desi” type that could potentially be used for large-scale cultivation under Brazilian conditions. |
