Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Surface electromyography is been established as a promising tool to assess muscular activity of transfemoral amputees. However, besides the problems related to structural changes after amputation, there’s still obstacles involving the assistive technology used. The socket compromises the adaptation of electrodes to the residual limb and the evaluation of several residual muscles concomitantly. The presence of cables and electrodes inside the socket decreases interface function, influencing performance and comfort during the acquisition. This scenario justifies the need of development of an electromyography system integrated to a socket. Latex is a biomaterial wich presents characteristics as: biocompatibility, low price when compared to synthetic rubber, feasibility of manipulation and possibility of cables and electrodes integration to assess surface electromyography. OBJECTIVE: To develop and adapt lower limb prosthesis socket using latex biomaterial including a surface electromyography system and acquire electrical signal of residual muscles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a Project of technological development. The sample is represented by one male subject, with unilateral transfemoral amputation, physically active. Biomaterial latex was selected as a main product to socket confection. To surface electromyographic signal acquisition an electromyography Miotool USB (Miotec). The evaluation was executed on recto femoris, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris and semitendinous. Signal collection and analysis were performed by MiotecSuite software in its interface named MioGraph. To assess subject’s perception of used sockets, a questionnaire (scored in 0 to 10) were developed with objective questions concerning his opinion about comfort, articular mobility and suction. RESULTS: The present study was divided in four steps. The first step consisted in material preparation and prototypes confection using a plaster molds, tests with biomaterial latex and fiberglass and tests with electrodes and cables integration with the prototype. Second stage included the confection of four different sockets, third stage involved subject’s use and evaluation of sockets. In the fourth stage, electromyographic signal were acquired. CONCLUSION: In this study four socket made with latex biomaterial configurations were developed, three of them were integrated to different proposals to acquire surface electromyography. The results obtained with model without surface electromyography integration shown latex biomaterial as an adequate material to socket confection. In relation to sockets developed to acquire sEMG, the model with openings in the wall to electrodes positioning presented the highest quality in signal visualization. In this study pilot tests were conduced but more tests and acquisitions is needed to improve models developed and sEMG analysis.
