| Abstract: | Introduction: Grazing it is an eating pattern which is able to impairs the outcomes of bariatric surgery and can influence weight regain, that may contribute to the failure of surgical treatment of obesity. This behavior consists of eating a small and repeated amount of food throughout the day, in response or not to hunger or satiety, and can be classified as to subtypes: compulsive and non-compulsive grazing. Aim: To estimate the prevalence of grazing and its association with anthropometric outcomes and surgery success in the late post-operative period of patients who underwent bariatric surgery. Method: This is a cross-sectional study, part of the project “Food consumption, lifestyle, control of comorbidities and nutritional status of patients undergoing bariatric surgery”, with patients who underwent bariatric surgery for at least 5 years prior, using the Roux-en-Y technique (BGYR) in the Federal District, Brazil. Participants were contact by social medias, posters and telephones provided from medical records. Questionnaires were applied to investigate sociodemographic, surgery data, adherence variables, and the Rep (eat)_Q questionnaire was used to measure grazing. Anthropometric measurements of height and weight were performed and body mass index (BMI), percentage of total weight loss (%TWL) and percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL) were calculated with the propose to evaluate the surgical success. To analyze differences between people with or without grazing behavior, the chi-square and Student's T tests were used and, when relevant, Pearson's correlation was applied. Results: 109 volunteers were evaluated, 91.7% women with mean age of 50.6 ± 9.1 years and time since bariatric surgery of 10.0 ± 2.4 years. The prevalence of grazing was 67%, which 12.3% were non-compulsive, 5.5% compulsive and 82.2% with both subtypes. There were significant and negative correlations between the presence of grazing with %TWL and %EWL and positive correlation with BMI. The fact of not having psychological counseling was related to the greater presence of behavior (p = 0.042). Surgical success was more prevalent among people without grazing behavior. Conclusion: The prevalence of grazing behavior was high among patients in the long-term post-operative period of RYGB. Their presence associated with not engaging in a multi-professional care, negatively interfered the surgical success assessed from the performance of weight loss parameters. Longitudinal studies are needed to improve strategies for both identifying and monitoring behavior. |
