Abstract: In the analog-to-digital conversion process, linear quantization is the most used. This quantization technique can, however, generate large quantization errors. These errors can be so bigger that the signal-to-noise ratio will not going to be sufficient to recover all the information contained in the signal. As an alternative to this problem, a non-linear quantization technique can be used. This work presents the modeling of non-linear quantizers for application in analog-digital converters with Σ-∆ multi-bit architecture. The designed quantizers use the Unscented Transform and the Logarithmic Companding technique and were developed with the aid of the Cadence and Matlab tools, following the Top-Down design methodology. The hardware description language, Verilog-A, was used in the mod- eling, which enables behavioral analysis and mixed simulation. The first part of this work presents the modeling of non-linear quantizers and also of a linear quantizer to be used as a reference. To validate the operation of the quantizers, the analysis was performed in time and frequency domains and the results obtained were compared. The second part presents the application of quantizers designed in Σ-∆ modulators of 1st and 2nd ordes in order to validate their operation. In this part, time and frequency analysis was also performed and the dynamic parameters of each topology were extracted. The results of the simulations showed that the non-linear quantizers performed better than the linear quantizer in parameters related to distortion, quantization noise and resolution.
