Abstract:	The present study evaluates the national-press coverage of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. For this reason, news articles were selected from three newspapers (Folha de São Paulo, Estado de São Paulo, and O Globo), specifically during three periods following the announcements of annual deforestation rates: 2005, 2007 and 2008. By means of an analysis of content, a quantitative evaluation was carried out considering the following aspects: the full amount of news, the sources of information, the groups of mediated actors, the subjects, the main focuses and the reported causes of the deforestation. Concerning the volume of news published, we observed a both a sharp overall inter annual oscillation and a variation amongst the three newspapers. In 2008, the press coverage was the most intensive and represented around 60% of the universe of the analyzed news. The concentration of the discussion occurred mainly in Folha de São Paulo and in O Estado de São Paulo, responsible for more than 80% of the sample in the period of 2008. The governmental sources of information prevail widely in the news, whereas the plurality of voices and the diversity of subjects related to the deforestation are not much considered, varying according to the states of affairs of each period. The results of this work demonstrate that the mass media has been having difficulties to distinguish the scientific relevant information from that produced under dispute of interests. Communication specialists interviewed in the course of this work pointed out some of the weaknesses of the national-press coverage of the deforestation, like the discontinuous treatment of the subject by the newspapers, the lack of qualification of the journalists and the lack of investments of the newspapers in the elaboration of deeper and more qualified reports. At the same time, the interviewees believe that a new window of opportunity opens for a journalism more committed to the global social-environmental questions.
