Abstract:	Floral morphological changes, incompatibility systems and pollinator behavior are key traits to the evolution of reproductive systems in angiosperms. Analyzing function in the variation of sexual systems and floral morphology within a species (polymorphic species) collaborates for understanding the evolutionary history and reproductive diversity among angiosperms. Connaraceae presents in which all its representatives exhibit different reproductive strategies, from dioecious (sexual polymorphic) to hermaphroditic with heterostyly (floral polymorphic) species, still little investigated. In the present thesis, the reproductive strategies in this family were investigated with focus on the effects of sexual selection on the reproductive biology evolution. To this end, herborized and fresh flowers of many species were measured and the two whorls of stamens and pistils were considered in the analyses. In addition, populations of the most common Connaraceae in the central savanna of Brazil: Connarus suberosus and Rourea induta were also monitored. The thesis consists in three chapters focusing on: 1) functionality of sexual organs and reciprocal hercogamy among flowers of different morphs in globally distributed Connaraceae species; 2) reproductive and vegetative investment between different morphs in Connarus suberosus e Rourea induta; 3) female and male sterility in Connarus suberosus, an endemic species from Brazilian savanna. Including the study of herbaria material and fieldwork, new reproductive systems and behaviors are proposed to the family. The results of the chapters highlight that floral polymorphisms occur in all taxa, although with unbalanced occurrence of low, medium and high organs, related to the sexual specialization among individuals that plays different functions in the species. The sexual dimorphism occurring within the family is related to the sterility of pistils and stamens lows. Finally, the two most common Connaraceae in the savanna exhibit different flowering strategies and distinctly respond to the influence of climatic variables. The data are discussed from a morphological, ecological and evolutive perspective contributing to the comprehension of evolution of reproductive systems in other polymorphic plant groups.
