Abstract: Systematic studies are needed on the main component of a transmission line, the conductor cable, in order to improve the process of transmission and distribution of electrical. One of the mechanical problems that most affect conductor cable's life is the fretting fatigue phenomenon. In this context, the aim of this dissertation was to analyze the fatigue life between AA 6201 T81 and AA 1120 alloy wires comparatively through an experimental program, which would allow the isolation of the fretting phenomenon under controlled conditions. To achieve these goals, a program of tests was developed in the mechanical testing laboratories at the University of Brasília. The program was based on three stages. First, the materials were characterized by tensile tests and fatigue tests. Second stage, the fretting induction tests were carried out under controlled conditions. These conditions were determined by the contact angle of 29o and normal contact loads of 250 N, 500 N, 750 N and 1000 N. The third stage consisted on the microscopic analysis of the contact regions between the wires, in addition to the failure surfaces. Finally, with the results obtained, it was possible to verify that fretting induction generated two distinct scenarios, the first, wear, and the second, fretting fatigue. These characteristics were proven through the observation of failures through microscopy. For the AA 6201 T81 alloy wires, fretting fatigue was observed in the 750 N and 1000 N tests, in the 250 N load it proved that there was wear, for the 500 N load, both types of contact problems was noted, which may indicate that there is a transition region for this force. On the other hand, all the curves referring to the wires of the 1120 aluminum alloy had their faults classified as fretting fatigue. In the comparison between the curves that occurred fretting fatigue for both alloys (750 N and 1000 N), it was found that the AA 6201 T81 alloy wires were more sensitive to fretting, despite having greater static and fatigue endurance.
