| Abstract: | This thesis studies the social movements of the New Left in Latin America and the paths towards institutionalization that some of these movements have taken since 2011, year that witnessed the outbreak of a new cycle of demonstrations across the globe. As a result of the combination between the economic and political crisis, the social movements of the New Left arise questioning the limits of the liberal democracy as a way to organize and address their criticism to the “wealthiest 1%” and to the political elites committed with the latter. In Latin America, these movements gained prominence through demonstrations in favor of basic public services, against corruption or electoral fraud, against the impact of large infrastructure projects and opposing neoliberalism. Due to their outstanding protagonism in the cycle of conflicts opened in 2011, these movements began to strongly interact with the political system, which resulted in different paths towards institutionalization. This thesis focuses on three particular cases: the students movement in Chile; the homeless movement in Brazil, the movement #YoSoy132 in Mexico. Each of them took a specific path when interacting with the political party system; the complete institutionalization by means of the creation of new political parties (Chile), a partial institutionalization represented by the alliance between political parties and social movements (Brazil), and the rejection of the institutionalization process (Mexico). As a result of assessing these different paths, this thesis presents a theoretic model that outlines the variables that favor or restrain the process of institutionalization of the social movements of the New Left, such as autonomy in relation to political systems, trust in the institutions of the representative democracy, the relationship with the existence of progressive experiences in power, accessibility to the partisan system and the internal cohesion of the social movements object of this study. |
