Abstract:	[Introduction] Three-dimensional digital models are part of the reality of the dental market. Although the majority of Brazilian orthodontists do not have intraoral scanners in their offices, scanning can be performed by the patient in diagnostic clinics at the request of their dentist. In this way, the digital model has become available to the orthodontists for their clinical practice; however, in part, without the more sophisticated orthodontic software. It is not known if digital models are able to replace the plaster models without the need for such software. [Objective] To assess the experience and the ability of orthodontists in analyzing orthodontic initial records containing a digital model, by means of a simple three-dimensional viewer application (Emb3D Viewer) on a touchscreen tablet. The orthodontist’s reasons for choosing the digital model, advantages, disadvantages, personal conceptions in how patients are interested in this new form of presentation, use of the "guesstimate" and expectations towards adoption of the “digital flow” were also objects of study. [Method] We used qualitative methods with an exploratory approach. Semi-structured interviews were carried out on an intentional sample of 24 private-care orthodontists in the Federal District. Transcripts of the interviews were analyzed for content. [Results] The main reason for opting for digital models was the orthodontic diagnosis. In most orthodontists, they had good experience in using the application, were able to perform a superficial analysis of the malocclusion on the model that was presented; however, the impossibility of measuring or of making setup were pointed out. Among the advantages attributed to the digital model were the ease of storage, detail accuracy and ease of communication. A digital on-screen presentation for patients was regarded as advantageous by orthodontists. The disadvantage most commonly attributed to the digital model was the cost followed by the lack of tactile sensitivity. It is routine for some orthodontists to calculate measurements through the “guesstimate” without the need of precise measures when studying simpler cases. Most orthodontists intend to migrate to the “digital flow” and believe that this is a natural trend, but they also pointed out that this movement will require more dedication and specific training and courses.
