| Abstract: | Three quarters of Brazilian families report financial difficulties in dealing with monthly expenses. Several initiatives to develop capacities to deal with financial problems have been implemented. However, the effectiveness of these interventions was not satisfactory. Although subjective financial well-being has a clear relationship with income, evidence suggests that there are other factors that impact it negatively or positively. This work aimed to evaluate an intervention to promote subjective financial well-being and is organized in three manuscripts. The first theoretical manuscript explores the applicability of research evidence in Psychology and Economics for proposing risk and protective factors for subjective financial well-being. Hedonic adaptation, social comparison and decision making in the use of time and money are proposed as risk factors. Mindfulness, gratitude and self-knowledge are proposed as protective factors. The second manuscript addresses a process evaluation of an intervention to promote financial well-being. The integrated model of change and protective factors for subjective financial well- being was adopted in the design of the intervention. Thirty-three public servants participated in a group intervention, during ten sessions, totaling 40 hours, divided into three distinct groups. The instruments had forms of evaluation of the mechanisms of action and of session evaluation, collected during the intervention, in addition to forms of general evaluation of the course and of growth evaluation, collected at the end of the intervention. The results indicated evidence favorable to acceptability, engagement and group cohesion, despite the heterogeneity in age and income of the participants. The third manuscript describes the effectiveness of the same intervention whose process was evaluated in Manuscript 2. A quasi-experimental design was used, with 28 respondents who participated in the intervention group, and 18 respondents in the control group. The measures included scales of subjective financial well-being; life assessment; gratitude; propensity to financial planning; materialism; preference for credit; and mindfulness. There were three moments of data collection, the first at the beginning of the first session of the intervention, the second at the end of the last session and the third six months after the end of the intervention. The results showed an improvement in subjective financial well-being in general and more salient effects for participants in the intervention with a greater degree of financial vulnerability. The mechanisms of gratitude, mindfulness, propensity for planning, preference for the use of credit and materialism had different impacts depending on the degree of financial vulnerability. A linear regression model of subjective financial well-being as a function of the mechanisms of change pointed out significant coefficients that influence well-being. Such promising evidence suggests that it is pertinent to replicate this intervention in new contexts, including for more vulnerable populations, and the longitudinal assessment of effects on financial well-being, both in its subjective and objective dimensions. |
