| Abstract: | The Road Safety Audit (RSA) is a procedure that allows for the identification and the correction of elements that create risk of accident situations on highways, before they actually occur. As one is dealing with existing roadways, inspection becomes an important activity when it comes to providing support for the development of an RSA. On the other hand, the technology associated with virtual environments has become widely employed in a number of areas, as it allows for immersion, of an individual, into a virtual scenario, where it is possible to observe elements of interest many times over. In light of the aforementioned, the main objective of this thesis is the proposal, in a pioneering form for this area, of RSA procedures for rural highways in operation, denominated as the a Hybrid Road Safety Audit (H-RSA), which includes, in complementary fashion, inspections performed in virtual environments. In order to achieve this, the following were developed: a) a checklist in RSA for field inspections and a checklist adjusted to virtual environment inspections; b) a method that employs the use of new technologies, such as virtual reality glasses and a mobile electronic app with an ease of use interface for the auditor; and c) an ASV procedure that includes information on the design consistency of the road in the H-RSA. Aimed at the analyzing the applicability of the H-RSA, a stretch of Brazilian rural highway, in operation, was used as a case study. To establish the hypothesis that the employment of virtual environment technology is adequate in a complementary role to traditional RSA techniques, two groups of auditors performed inspections in distinct ways: one group, denominated as A, applied the verification list in loco; while the other, denominated as B, performed inspections for the same location, with part in loco and part using virtual reality glasses. The results obtained through these experiments were tested taking as a parameter the t test, where it was highlighted that there existed no significant difference between the responses measured from group A and B, thus indicating the potential for the performing of a hybrid inspection. The incorporation of new technologies in the support of RSA field inspection activities, can be seen as a new and complementary tool to traditional audits. This proposal, which includes the evaluation of stretches of highway in virtual environments, can guarantee the required systematic process, facilitate management by means of data collection and permit verification at any time through the revisiting of the virtual environment, thus promoting auditor team safety through the reduction of time exposed on stretches of highway. Therefore, the proposal has the potential to make RSA more accessible, which can aid highway concessionaires and regulatory agencies when it comes to the necessary improvements concerning the promoting of road safety. |
