Abstract:	Urbanization is a growing problem anywhere in the world. Cities management represents a problem difficult to manage since decisions can affect millions and millions of people. Nevertheless, urban areas can also be an excellent opportunity to maintain biodiversity, since several species can adapt to them and live with us. Here we assess how species adapted to urban areas, such as the Turquoise-fronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva), potentially uses the urban spaces and how they can cross an urban matrix to disperse between remaining native areas. We tested if (1) potential dispersal routes would tend to be located near areas with occurrence of the species and (2) if the movement would be more oriented in a homogeneous matrix (few variation in potential routes) than in heterogeneous one (more variation in potential routes). Based on a habitat suitability map, we modeled the potential dispersal routes on the Brasilia city in Central Brazil. We tested the location of potential routes by installing automatic digital recorders in 30 points at different distances from the central axis of the corridors, expecting that points with the presence of the Turquoise-fronted amazon would be closer to the potential routes than points without the species. We tested our second hypothesis by correlating Shannon’s diversity index, a proxy to the spatial heterogeneity, with different metrics that characterize the potential routes. We examined such relationships at different spatial scales. Our results suggest that for at least one of the simulation models, the routes passed near points with the confirmed presence of the parrots, showing the possibility of modeling dispersal routes. For hypothesis 2, we found a significant relationship between the potential routes and the spatial heterogeneity for the smaller scale (1 km2 grid). In general, displacements with little spatial variation (more oriented) were observed at the more homogeneous areas (as in the natural ecosystems). Routes with more spatial variation (less oriented) were observed in the urban matrix. The obtained results allow the development of different strategies of natural environment management in the urban or peri-urban matrix because the management of spatial heterogeneity can help to guide the displacement of species between desired areas and areas to be avoided.
