Abstract:	One of the main emphasis in the development of radio studies is conceptual: What is radio? This is the question of this work, but we will give it an indirect answer, i.e. more rather than trying to produce a new conception, what interests us is to know what is meant by radio. In a way, every radio theory brings up a notion – explicit or implicit – of what radio is, every theory in a way constitutes an answer to our question. This is the point investigated here. The treatment we have taken to the matter has employed a number of approach strategies. First the historical approach, in which we follow the emergence of our object, the radio that is used as a mass media and also the tensions that technological evolution exerts on the radio concept itself, particularly the arrival of digital technologies and the internet. Next, we adopted the bibliographic approach, in which we analyzed theoretical production. Our research corpus has as its main reference two works published in Brazil, with explicit focus on radio theories, in addition to a vast literature, which contain surveys and panoramas of research and studies of this media and notes on scientific production on radio. We also conducted interviews with important specialized authors, a material that helped complement the previous approach. The set of these approaches allowed us to critically identify and analyze the main problems that form the set of discussions about what radio is. The results show convergence between the need to produce specific theories and the difficulties of conceptualizing radio. The main understandings take it as a means of communication or as a language, but there is also the latest tendency to replace it with the radio.
