Abstract:	Many are the sides of Brazilian urban violence, which demand diverse actions and critical thinking on the part of society and public authorities towards the mitigation of the presented challenges. One of these sides is lynching, a phenomenon that has affected more frequently the daily life of the great Brazilian cities and that is presented as violent and abrupt popular action in reaction to individuals who may, according to popular assertion, have infringed any rule, tacitly or explicitly established. However, the hypothesis that generated this dissertation is the existence of a web of community relations that endorse lynching as a component of a broader plot whose central elements for understanding are the internal relations to the life of the communities where lynching is most common and the relations of gender and the racial context. Therefore, this dissertation is the result of a six-month ethnographic research (from January to August 2018) carried out in a black neighborhood of São Luís, in Maranhão, attempting an immersion into daily life in order to unveil elements that may substantiate the understanding of lynching as a phenomenon. The dissertation contextualizes the community researched within the dynamics of the city of São Luís – situating it eminently as a black neighborhood –, unveils the dynamics of interaction among residents – considering sidewalks and corners the greatest spaces of exchange –, presents a report on various occurrences in the location that reinforce the solidary aspect of community life, and describes cases when lynching was a way of action considered and at times taken by the population – having occurred not only in the researched neighborhood but also in other areas of São Luís and in the countryside due to general repercussion. The ethnographic research, aligned with the concepts of necropolitics, race, coloniality of power and masculinity, allowed the reflection that, in summary, there are indications to understand lynching as one of the faces of black genocide articulated by the State, which, by various means, exterminates the chances of collective and political existence for the black population.
