Abstract:	Introduction: Denture stomatitis is a fungal infection commonly found in removable denture wearers, specially in older adults, and can be attributed to dysbiosis. Natural products have attracted interest as an alternative to synthetic drugs because of their effectiveness and safety that make them optimal to use in older adults. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a propolis formulation associated with Punica granatum for the denture stomatitis treatment. Methods: A total of 40 older patients with denture stomatitis were randomly allocated into two groups in order to receive oral topical treatment. The control group (C) received 20 mg/g miconazole oral gel and the study group (PR) received spray containing 0.5% propolis extract and 0.9% pomegranate extract, during 14 days. Participants were examined by a dentist on days 1, 7 and 14. The Newton’s score was used to assess the clinical aspect of denture stomatitis. The number of colonies of Candida spp was quantified and compared before and after the treatment (days 1 and 14). Results: Both treatments reduced the Newton`s score; the cure rate for group C was 75% and for the PR group was 40%. There was a significant reduction of CFU / mL only in the group C. Conclusion: The clinical efficacy of propolis associated with Punica granatum was non-inferior to the miconazole considering the non-inferiority margin, and may be an alternative in the treatment of denture stomatitis in older adults.
