Abstract:	This work analyses the extent to which the recruitment of Haitian workers by a meatpacking company in Encantado - a town situated in the Taquari Valley, Rio Grande do Sul - has contributed to the making of new spaces, articulating them to the logic of Haitian transnational spaces and to the internationalization of labor in the context of a global economy. The specific social dynamics pertaining to the ethnographic context are not portrayed as independent realities nor as mechanical reflexes of transnational social processes, but as elements which participate in the constitution of the global. I have benefited from the comprehension of the underlying power dynamics involved in the interethnic and interracial system in Encantado so as to shed light over the impact of cultural constructions of inequality (ethnic, cultural, racial, gender and migratory juridical status) on the social configuration of labor relations. The company is analyzed as a social space of exploitation, discipline and resistance, which indicate technologies of control of the work force as well as resistance strategies on the part of the works which include the resource of mobility itself. The anthropological notions of gift and debt are used to deal with different types of gifts and countergifts which bind the recently-arrives Haitian immigrants to the established local dwellers, also generations relations of solidarity and dependence. Finally, I discuss the social conditions for the insertion of the Haitians in Encantado’s formal and informal housing market, by identifying two movements: the attempt at selective immobilization of the work force by residential policies geared towards foreign employees whose access to housing was conditioned to the continuity of job contracts; and the social processes of marginalization and precarious housing to which Haitian were submitted.
