| Abstract: | Rapid urban growth makes it common to observe conflicts between wildlife and humans. These conflicts range from the transmission of diseases to homes invasion and collision with vehicles, including airplanes. Within this scenario, airports represent one of the most emblematic places in the conflict between humans and wildlife due to aircraft-animal collisions leading to life-threatening, economic costs and death of the animals. This has led to the emergence of many wildlife management proposals in order to reduce the impacts at airports, ranging from changes in the environment (to make sites less suitable for animals) to euthanasia (for population reduction). However, few methods have been effectively tested. Translocation, for example, is widely used in Brazil as a form of management, although little has been done to test its effectiveness as a viable option. In this way, the main objective of the present study was to understand the effectiveness of the translocation of burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia) and to investigate the relation of environmental factors and the sex of the individuals with their permanence in the new area, also evaluating the trajectories used by the birds monitored in order to model their routes. The animals were captured at Brasília International Airport from May to October 2018. These birds were tagged with colored rings and a metal ring in their feet and a transmitter radio, and after collection of blood for sexing, were translocated for various distances (within a 30 km range of Brasília International Airport). Sites for the releases were randomized in the computer and inspected prior to the translocations. It was generated a habitat suitability model based on data about the presence of owls in the study area. This allowed us to test dispersion models in order to predict the routes traveled by the animals. We run a simpler "least-cost path" model (more widely used) and a more complex model that allows incorporating variability and the animal’s perception on the landscape in these predictions. Our results were divided into two chapters. In the first chapter, we showed that the translocation method is not an effective management because the translocated birds did not remain in the release areas that are already occupied with other individuals. Furthermore, we verified that the translocation of males and females should be considered separately, since males are more significantly driven out by pre-established animals than females. In the second chapter, we discuss the effectiveness of the models in predicting the routes used by translocated birds. These predictions are important to understand basic aspects of the species such as: dispersion, migration, occupation and preference in the use of environments. So it was possible to demonstrate the importance of adding variability to the model. On the other hand, the addition of the animals' perception on the landscape did not improve the model for the burrowing owl. |
