Abstract: In view of theoretical and empirical recommendations, it was analyzed the thesis that the work design of public managers explains the expression of their managerial competences, and the perception that the public servants have as to the expression of competences of their managers explains the design of the work of these public servants, considering the peculiarities related to sociodemographic and functional. With the general aim of discussing relationships between work design, managerial competences and sociodemographic and functional variables, in a public body of the Brazilian Judiciary, three studies were undertaken. The first study reached the specific objective of developing and presenting evidence of the validity of scales of managerial competencies in the public sector in formats of self and hetero-evaluation. For the development of the scales, literature review, content analysis, evaluation by judges and pre-test. For the presentation of evidence of validity, two collections were carried out together with 2,147 public servers and managers, which allowed an Exploratory Factor Analysis and two Confirmations, in addition to the Kruskal-Wallis Test and analysis of descriptive statistics. The results, in general, pointed to validity of content, convergent, discriminant and criterion for the grouping in three factors for both self and hetero-evaluation (Factor 1 – Processes and Results, Factor 2 – Human Relations and Innovation, and Factor 3 – Public Interest), which are supported in the literature. The second study reached the specific objective of presenting evidence of validity of the Brazilian version of the Work Design Questionnaire - WDQ-BR (Guimarães, 2017), in the context of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ). For the presentation of evidence of validity, a collection of 895 servers and managers of the STJ was carried out, which allowed, by means of Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Kruskal-Wallis Test and analysis of descriptive statistics, to compare eleven different groupings for items identified in WDQ in English, German, Italian, Spanish, French, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese. The results, in general, indicated validity, convergent, discriminant and criterion for the grouping in 17 factors, as well as in the original American version of the WDQ, proposed by Morgeson and Humphrey (2006), disregarding the contextual characteristics. Finally, the third study reached the specific objective of discussing relationships between managers 'and employees' work design, managerial competences and sociodemographic and functional variables in the STJ. Using data from the STJ collection, related to managerial competences and work design, the data were analyzed using Kendall-tau correlation analysis, structural equation modeling, and logistic regression. The results showed that (1) the design of the work of managers of the STJ explains the self-assessment of the expression of their managerial competencies; (2) the way servers perceive the expression of managerial competencies by their superiors explains how they perceive the characteristics of their own work design; and (3) gender and functional variables (area of activity, hierarchical level, position occupied, and type of gratification received or not) explain the work design of managers and servers and/or the expression of competencies of the managers. Finally, implications and limitations of the studies were presented, as well as recommendations for future research, including the search for evidence of validity of the instruments in other contexts and correlational studies with individual and contextual variables related to organizational behavior.
